Crossville EcocycleIf the folks at Crossville are beaming a bit more brightly this month, it’s not just their 25th anniversary—they’ve just become the first U.S. tile manufacturer to achieve third-party certification for its waste-recycling program by Scientific Certification Systems. The achievement is the result of a cross-industry strategic alliance with Toto, which calls on the bath and plumbing giant to supply Crossville with pre-consumer waste generated by its production processes. Crossville will utilize the materials to feed its proprietary EcoCycle Recycling Process, which turns ceramic and porcelain tiles and sanitary wares into powder that’s used to manufacture new tiles. The immediate result? “By certifying its processes, rather than individual products, Crossville will be able to expand its recycled-content products,” says president and CEO John Smith. The goods will be labeled with a new EcoCycle logo that also specifies the type and amount of recycled content. Already, the manufacturer recycles 12 million pounds of previously discarded materials every year.
